Check & Connect

Check & Connect is a program developed to re-engage students in their education.

Through long-term sustained support, Check & Connect seeks to build a relationship with each student that will serve to connect them with their school and aid in their progress towards graduation.
Weekly conversations, tutoring, and homework help form the basis for a trusted bond between the student and the Check & Connect Monitor. This enables the monitor to individually and definitively determine the interventions best suited to the students’ needs. The monitor then works on behalf of the student as a mentor, tutor, problem-solver, listener, and case advocate.

At Longfellow, we have three C&C Monitors that work with the entire student population.

Veronica Pettini:

Hey everyone! I'm thrilled to be back for my third year at Longfellow! I graduated from DePaul University in Chicago in 2011 with a degree in Communications and a double minor in Applied Psychology and Digital Cinema. I'm also a Cheer Coach when I'm not at Longfellow. When I'm not working you will likely catch me with friends, binge watching tv shows, or eating delicious food. Food is the quickest way to my heart. My favorite book is "The Princess Bride" or the "Harry Potter" series.

Come visit in room 102!

Alex Spirov:

My name is Alex Spirov and you can find me in the Check and Connect office! I grew up in Minneapolis; some of my favorite places around the city are First Ave, Pizza Luce and Lake Harriet. I graduated from Beloit College in Wisconsin in May 2015, majoring in Health and Society and minoring in Spanish. I really enjoying riding my 1980 Vintage Schwinn Varsity bicycle and eating good food. I prefer dogs over cats, but I ended up with a pretty spunky cat who I trained to sit. My favorite animals are goats, bears and lions. I identify with the lyric, “We hardly know ourselves if we know nobody else” by Blue Scholars and I like to collect rocks.

Leah Bentfield:

Hello all! This is my second year at LAHS, and I'm excited to hit the ground running with our returning C&C team and amazing group of students!

A little about myself... I graduated in 2015 from Winona State University with a degree in psychology. After graduating I joined Americorps where I found the C&C position at Longfellow. Outside of work, I volunteer at a local bookstore, play league volleyball, ski (I LOVE snow and I'm not afraid to say it!), and dabble in politics. My favorite book is My Sister's Keeper, by Jodi Piccoult and favorite TV show is Scandal.
